As the readers could see in the prior segments of this story, my parents were very strong warriors that always fought fiercely against any force or regime that was authoritarian in essence, and those values on freedom and democracy were passed on to their children very intentionally and very plainly. Freedom, in any of its forms, was always a concept that was on top of any other priority.There was never any doubt or compromising on this issue. Their actions throughout their lives were always consistent with their convictions about the sanctity of freedom.I am very glad for that, because I was able to learn a great lesson from them that I would also apply to myself and my own family as well
I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been for my parents to lose all their possessions twice i'm having to start all over again every time. , yes they lost everything one Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia. Then they lost it all again When they fled The Communist Czechoslovakia. In both instances They left everything Behind. - all possessions and all properties.When in 1951 the family moved to Brazil my parents could at least take whatever they had with them - and that was not that much! And then they had to restart their life for the third time. All because they would not compromise their (and our) freedom. What a magnificent example of commitment to freedom and liberty!
Once established in Brazil, my parents felt that they were safe against the dangers of Communism. But I remember their immense concerns when in the early 1960s the threat of Communism became real down there too as the Vice President, João Goulart (aka Jango) was swerved in as President in 1961 after Janio Quadros renounced the Presidency only about six months after inauguration. Goulart was a Communist! And he immediately started his evil work. But when in 1964 the country was almost under a Communist regime,the Armed Forces took care of business and put the country back on track. they saved us all from being trapped in a Communist regime, and the first President was General Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco, an exceptional man that immediately started a cleaning up operation to remove the Communists that had infiltrated the country everywhere. He preserved and strengthened all institutions, thus bringing peace of mind to the population.The Tichy family was, once again, free from an authoritarian regime. What a relief it was!
The question, though, remained in the back of our minds, "For how long will this safety last?" America, yes, America will always be the only place where Democracy will reign forever, the only place when one will not be threatened by any authoritarian regime. Therefore, that should be our last destination, "America the beautiful, the land of the free."
So, as I wrote before, in 1989 we made it, we came to that attractive land that was full of opportunities and, above all, was safe and protected from any authoritarian regime. As a family, this was a dream come through, and now we could live far away from what our parents went through during the old days of Fascism and Communism in Europe. The years went by with no great disturbances even though during the George W. Bush administration the corruption induced and supporter by the Vice President, Dick Cheney, was astonishing. The great hoax, the supposed AMDs (arms of mass destruction) that Saddam Hussein was supposedly making in Iraq opened the doors of hell and America went to war against Iraq. The price paid for that crazy and evil action that was primarily pushed by Cheney would at the end be incalculable. But, America was still holding firm to being a Democratic State - totally oblivious to what would soon happen.
Bush and Cheney were very destructive in several aspects, especially to the economy. But when Barack Obama and Joe Biden became the national leaders, most things were corrected, despite the evil and shameful opposition of the Republican Party. And then ... shit really hit the fan, when the country elected Donald Trump - who for the next four years will create just chaos after chaos. Those days were hard, frustrating, and very concerning - because Trump was clearly showing tendencies for a Fascist regime.
The following election brought Biden and Harris to rescue the country again, and they were inaugurated despite the sedition attempted by Trump on January 06, 2021. A very unhinged, and clearly mentally disturbed Trump attempted to subvert our Democracy. But Democracy prevailed again. And then ... shit hit the fan again, and Trump was elected for a second term in November of 2024, Hell broke loose, and here we are in 2026 with a Fascist regime fiercely destroying the country that was once, "America the beautiful,the land of the free." Now it is a land of corruption, lawlessness, terror on the streets, and international embarrassment.
For me,, personally it has been very difficult to contemplate the fact that my parents did the impossible to avoid living in a country where fascism or communism were the dominant forms of government and, , after making it to America, Fascism caught up with me. This has been extremely frustrating because it's like a dream that became a nightmare.The cartel That is installed in the White House at this very Moment is not then yet.Stay tuned!
